Associted Press updated 8:51 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2009
'Thriller' to be saved in national film registry

Washington - Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video, with that unforgettable graveyard dance, will rest among the nation’s treasures in the world’s largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.
The 1983 music video directed by John Landis, though still the subject of lawsuits over profits, was one of 25 films to be inducted Wednesday for preservation in the 2009 National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

It’s the first music video named to the registry. It had been considered in past years, but following Jackson’s death, the time was right, said Steve Leggett, coordinator of the National Film Preservation Board.

“Because of the way the recording industry is evolving and changing, we thought it would be good to go back to the development of an earlier seismic shift, which was the development of the music video,” he said.
The library works with film archives and movie studios to ensure original copies are kept safe. It also acquires a copy for preservation in its own vaults among millions of other recordings at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in the hills near Culpeper, Va.

Congress established the registry in 1989, which now totals 525 films. They are selected not as the “best” American films but instead for their enduring importance to U.S. culture.
The library selects films that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant after reviewing hundreds of titles nominated by the public and consulting with the National Film Preservation Board.

Jackson's Thriller album becomes US National Treasure
MAY 15, 2008

The US Library of Congress has officially added Michael Jackson's Thriller to its National Recording Registry. In an effort to preserve records deemed "culturally and aesthetically significant", the Library has archived the album's "best existing version" its existence in perpetuity. Aside from being the biggest selling album of all time, Thriller also contained seven #1 hit singles, remained on Billboard's Top 10 for one year, won the Grammy award for Best Album and was recently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Deepak Chopra: A Tribute to My Friend, Michael Jackson

A Tribute to My Friend, Michael Jackson

June 26th, 2009

Michael Jackson will be remembered, most likely, as a shattered icon, a pop genius who wound up a mutant of fame. That’s not who I will remember, however. His mixture of mystery, isolation, indulgence, overwhelming global fame, and personal loneliness was intimately known to me. For twenty years I observed every aspect, and as easy as it was to love Michael — and to want to protect him — his sudden death yesterday seemed almost fated.

Two days previously he had called me in an upbeat, excited mood. The voice message said, “I’ve got some really good news to share with you.” He was writing a song about the environment, and he wanted me to help informally with the lyrics, as we had done several times before. When I tried to return his call, however, the number was disconnected. (Terminally spooked by his treatment in the press, he changed his phone number often.) So I never got to talk to him, and the music demo he sent me lies on my bedside table as a poignant symbol of an unfinished life.

When we first met, around 1988, I was struck by the combination of charisma and woundedness that surrounded Michael. He would be swarmed by crowds at an airport, perform an exhausting show for three hours, and then sit backstage afterward, as we did one night in Bucharest, drinking bottled water, glancing over some Sufi poetry as I walked into the room, and wanting to meditate.

That person, whom I considered (at the risk of ridicule) very pure, still survived — he was reading the poems of Rabindranath Tagore when we talked the last time, two weeks ago. Michael exemplified the paradox of many famous performers, being essentially shy, an introvert who would come to my house and spend most of the evening sitting by himself in a corner with his small children. I never saw less than a loving father when they were together (and wonder now, as anyone close to him would, what will happen to them in the aftermath).

Michael’s reluctance to grow up was another part of the paradox. My children adored him, and in return he responded in a childlike way. He declared often, as former child stars do, that he was robbed of his childhood. Considering the monstrously exaggerated value our society places on celebrity, which was showered on Michael without stint, the public was callous to his very real personal pain. It became another tawdry piece of the tabloid Jacko, pictured as a weird changeling and as something far more sinister.

It’s not my place to comment on the troubles Michael fell heir to from the past and then amplified by his misguided choices in life. He was surrounded by enablers, including a shameful plethora of M.D.s in Los Angeles and elsewhere who supplied him with prescription drugs. As many times as he would candidly confess that he had a problem, the conversation always ended with a deflection and denial. As I write this paragraph, the reports of drug abuse are spreading across the cable news channels. The instant I heard of his death this afternoon, I had a sinking feeling that prescription drugs would play a key part.

The closest we ever became, perhaps, was when Michael needed a book to sell primarily as a concert souvenir. It would contain pictures for his fans but there would also be a text consisting of short fables. I sat with him for hours while he dreamily wove Aesop-like tales about animals, mixed with words about music and his love of all things musical. This project became “Dancing the Dream” after I pulled the text together for him, acting strictly as a friend. It was this time together that convinced me of the modus vivendi Michael had devised for himself: to counter the tidal wave of stress that accompanies mega-stardom, he built a private retreat in a fantasy world where pink clouds veiled inner anguish and Peter Pan was a hero, not a pathology.

This compromise with reality gradually became unsustainable. He went to strange lengths to preserve it. Unbounded privilege became another toxic force in his undoing. What began as idiosyncracy, shyness, and vulnerability was ravaged by obsessions over health, paranoia over security, and an isolation that grew more and more unhealthy. When Michael passed me the music for that last song, the one sitting by my bedside waiting for the right words, the procedure for getting the CD to me rivaled a CIA covert operation in its secrecy.

My memory of Michael Jackson will be as complex and confused as anyone’s. His closest friends will close ranks and try to do everything in their power to insure that the good lives after him. Will we be successful in rescuing him after so many years of media distortion? No one can say. I only wanted to put some details on the record in his behalf. My son Gotham traveled with Michael as a roadie on his “Dangerous” tour when he was thirteen. Will it matter that Michael behaved with discipline and impeccable manners around my son? (It sends a shiver to recall something he told Gotham: “I don’t want to go out like Marlon Brando. I want to go out like Elvis.” Both icons were obsessions of this icon.)

His children’s nanny and surrogate mother, Grace Rwamba, is like another daughter to me. I introduced her to Michael when she was eighteen, a beautiful, heartwarming girl from Rwanda who is now grown up. She kept an eye on him for me and would call me whenever he was down or running too close to the edge. How heartbreaking for Grace that no one’s protective instincts and genuine love could avert this tragic day. An hour ago she was sobbing on the telephone from London. As a result, I couldn’t help but write this brief remembrance in sadness. But when the shock subsides and a thousand public voices recount Michael’s brilliant, joyous, embattled, enigmatic, bizarre trajectory, I hope the word “joyous” is the one that will rise from the ashes and shine as he once did.

Dancing the Dream: Dilip Mehta la Neverland - partea I (alb-negru)

"I think, I was the only Indian photographer to have spent time with MJ at Neverland. For me, it was a privilege to have photographed him candidly..."
"...I think MJ was a divine and brilliant artiste. He gave me unprecedented access. It was a phenomenal experience," Mehta told. (www.samaylive.com)

"The closest we ever became, perhaps, was when Michael needed a book to sell primarily as a concert souvenir. It would contain pictures for his fans but there would also be a text consisting of short fables. I sat with him for hours while he dreamily wove Aesop-like tales about animals, mixed with words about music and his love of all things musical. P.S.

Fred Astaire

We've Had Enough

Love was taken from a young live
And no one told her why
Her direction has a dim light
From one more violent crime

She innocently questioned why
Why her father had to die
She asked the men in blue
How is it that you get to choose
Who will live and who will die
Did God told that you could decide?
You saw he didn't run
And that my daddy had no gun

In the middle of the village
Within a distant land
Lies a poor boy with tears broke in toy
Too young to understand
He's awaken, ground is shaking
His father grabs his hand
Screaming crying, his wife's dying
Now he's left to explain

He innocently questioned why
Why his mother had to die
Why did these soldiers come here for?
If they're for peace why is there war?

Did God say that they could decide
Who will live and who will die?
All my mama ever did
Was try to take care of her kids

When innocence is standing by
Watching people loosing lives
It seem as if we have no voice
It's time for us to make a choice

Only God could decide
Who will live and who will die
There's nothing that can't be done
If we raise our voice as one

Did God hear it from me?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can't take it
We've already had enough

Did God hear it from me?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can't take it
We've already had enough

Thank God I care for me
Thank God I care for you
Thank God it came from you babe
We can't take it
We've already had enough

Deep in my soul baby
(Deep in your soul and by your side)
Deep in my soul
(It's so big and I'm still alive)
Did God hear it from us?
We can't take it
We've already had enough

It's going down baby
Just let God decide,
It's going on baby
Just let God decide
Deep in my soul baby
We've already had enough

Did God hear it from me ?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can't, we can't
We've already had enough

Enough - 1+2

Michael Jackson- Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

Who knows...?
(Dar versurile sunt aici.)

What More Can I Give / Todo para ti

How many people will have to die before we will take a stand
How many children will have to cry, before we do all we can
If sending your love is all you can give
To help one live, mmm

How many times can we turn our heads
And pretend we cannot see
Healing the wounds of our broken earth
We are one global family
Just sending your prayers
Is something you feel
Helping one heal
What have I got that I can give
(What have I got that I can give, tell me)
What have I got that I can give, yeah, oh
To love and to teach you
To hold and to need you
What more can I give (what more can I give, yeah)

brother to brother, lay down our fears and reach out and make a pact
Show him the love that is in our hearts, let us bring salvation back
Just sending your love has the power to heal
So let's all give

What have I got that I can give
(It's not a lot to give, just a little bit)
What have I got that I can give
(Everyone should be a part of it)
To love and to teach you
To hold and to need you
What more can I give

Say the words, I'll lay 'em down for you
Just call my name, I am your friend
See then why do they keep teaching us
Such hate and cruelty
We should give over and over again

What have I got that I can give
(We should give over and over again)
What have I got that I can give
(Oh my God, oh my God)
See, to love and to teach you
To hold and to need you
What more can I give

What have I got that I can give (aah)
What have I got that I can give
(Give to you, give to you)
See, to love and to teach you
To hold and to need you
What more can I give (Oooh)

Repeat

What have I got that I can give
(Give to you, we're gonna give to you)
What have I got that I can give
To hold and conceal you
To love and to heal you
What more can I give

What have I got that I can give
(What have I got)
(Send them your prayers)
What have I got that I can give
(Show the world how much you really care)
(To love you)
To love and to teach you
(To hold you, to need you)To hold and to need you
What more can I give

What have I got that I can give...

What More Can I Give / Todo para ti

"a song is a mantra, something you repeat over and over. And we need peace, we need giving, we need love, we need unity"

'I love you more,' Jackson tells young visitors

By Linda Deutsch
Los Olivos
December 19, 2004

A high-spirited Michael Jackson greeted about 200 children who were brought to the theme park at his California ranch yesterday - and looked at one point like he might even stay to play.

"I hope you have a wonderful day. Merry Christmas. I love you," the pop singer called out from the driveway of his estate.

When one of the youngsters shouted, "We love you!" Jackson replied "I love you more" before raising an umbrella and walking back towards his house.

In his brief appearance, Jackson smiled, waved and at one point looked as if he would come back and play with the children, but instead got into a vehicle that took him off the property.

Spokeswoman Raymone Bain said Jackson chose to make the unusual personal appearance as a surprise for the last group of children touring Neverland before the Christmas holiday.

Santa Barbara County authorities have charged Jackson, 46, with molesting a boy, administering alcohol and conspiracy. His trial is set for next year.

Investigators have carried out raids at the ranch, and in a recent court filing that seeks to introduce evidence of other purported crimes, prosecutors described the estate as "a veritable paradise" for children.

Ms Bain said charitable and civic groups brought children to Neverland at least three times a month; the estate contains streams, waterfalls and a lake, and the grounds are decorated with bronze statues of children at play. Yesterday, two elephants, a camel, a baby llama and flamingos were on hand. The estate provided sweets, popcorn and a Santa Claus. The children could also play in a video arcade with unlimited games.

"Generally Mr Jackson is not here all the time," Ms Bain said. "There are events here daily. He wanted to surprise the kids. He has given his whole life to children and charities."

Michael Jackson Is MTV News' Man Of The Year
The King of Pop may have passed away, but he continues to influence music and culture.
By James Montgomery

Which stars had the biggest year? All this week, we've been unveiling our Top 9 men and women of 2009, and now we are down to the top spot.
1. Michael Jackson

Where were you when you heard the news? It's a question reserved for only the biggest of moments, and it's usually not asked fondly. And that was the case with the death of Michael Jackson, an event that stopped the world in its tracks.

That's not hyperbole, either. Jackson's death on June 25 was a global event, bringing traffic in Times Square to a standstill, turning London's O2 Arena — where he was scheduled to hold a 50-show residency — into an impromptu memorial site, filling the streets of Paris, Berlin and Dakar, Senegal, with mourners. His fans gathered because they didn't know what else to do — so deep was their grief that they sought out the solace of strangers, their only connection the undying devotion to a man and his music, both of which, on one solemn day, disappeared forever.

It was an awful tragedy. Jackson's legacy — not just his music or his effortless showmanship, but his charitable work too — extended to every corner of the earth, reached places even the United Nations dared not tread. Even as his popularity waned here in the States (and waned is a relative term, considering, even though he hadn't released an album of new material in nearly a decade, his catalog still sold millions each year), he remained the most famous man on the planet, a near-deity seemingly lifted from the pulpy pages of a Siegel and Shuster comic, or, perhaps more correctly, a Greek tragedy.
Because, no matter how famous he became, no matter how many lives he touched, Jackson's life was shaped by sadness. He grew up under the authoritative rule of his father, he found immeasurable fame by the time he was a teenager and, really, he spent the remaining four decades of his life under the glare of the spotlight. Jackson never knew solitude; he was dogged by the media and surrounded by so-called "advisors" who didn't have his best interests at heart. There were the accusations of molestation, reams of hurtful press, rumors of everything from hyperbaric chambers to the bones of the Elephant Man.

If there was one good thing to come from Jackson's death, it was that all of those things ceased to matter. Finally, fittingly, the man was remembered for his work. Fans — not just nameless men and women but celebrities, musicians, even heads of state — paid tribute to his achievements in music, dance, music videos and charity. His hits were sung on stages and street corners around the world, his dance moves replicated online and on the screen. He was lauded as a pioneer, the first black megastar of the MTV era, the man who took funk, R&B and disco and made it accessible to white America.

We traced his legacy — his talent was so great that others (like Mariah Carey and Fall Out Boy) turned his hits into hits of their own. We watched in astonishment as his old albums re-took the upper reaches of the charts, and we looked back fondly on his many music videos — star-packed events that made the impossible seem possible. Stars from across the musical spectrum — everyone from 50 Cent and Jamie Foxx to Sheryl Crow — lined up to pay homage to the man. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna gave a heartfelt speech and Usher, Carey and Stevie Wonder, and was watched by some 31 million people in the U.S. alone. There was "This Is It," a feature-length film detailing the rehearsals for his O2 dates that earned more than $200 million worldwide. And there were the questions ... about the doctors he surrounded himself with in his final days, about the demons that haunted him, about the very nature of his death. Such are the kinds of things that can be expected when you're dealing with the most famous man on the planet.

But for all the questions, there was one certainty: Michael Jackson was one of the all-time greats, the likes of which we'll probably never see again. A man so big his death could stop the world. He was an innovator. He was a hitmaker. He was a pioneer. He was the unquestionable King of Pop, now and forever. Sometimes, we don't know what we've got until it's gone.

Which stars had the biggest 2009? Our list is based on factors like music sales, box-office performance, MTVNews.com headlines and traffic, overall reach (crossover singles, appearances in movies, licensing of songs for commercials, clothing lines, etc .), plus X-factors like "impact" and "buzz. " (And no, President Barack Obama didn't make the list — we left that to the folks at Time.) This is by no means an exact science, but we think the list we've put together represents the men and women who helped make 2009 the most exciting and memorable 12 months in recent history.

As always, we want to know what you think, so weigh in with comments below, or upload them to Your.MTV.com!

Michael Jackson To Receive Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award
Jackson's brothers would like to be involved in a tribute, if it takes place.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Michael Jackson will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy the day before the Grammy Awards take place on January 30, according to a statement released by the organization. Jackson is one of seven musicians set to receive the honor, a list that also includes singer Bobby Darin, singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, blues guitarist David "Honeyboy" Edwards, country legend and Jack White collaborator Loretta Lynn, composer Andre Previn and jazz trumpeter Clark Terry.

The awards will be handed out at the invite-only Special Merit Awards. Jackson was not eligible for any Grammy nods this year, although he won four American Music Awards posthumously.

And while no Grammy tribute to MJ had been announced at press time, at the junket for their A&E miniseries, "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty", the brothers responded with enthusiastic "Yeah!"s when asked if they'd like to be involved in such a tribute, should it take place.

"We'd just like to see exactly what went down in a great sort of tribute or whatever the plan is," Jermaine Jackson added. "We want it to be real."

If it occurs, the Grammy tribute would join a list that includes BET Awards shortly after Michael's death, which saw sister Janet giving a brief speech and musical tributes; the 2009 Video Music Awards, where Janet and Madonna paid tribute to him via a performance and a speech, respectively; and on "Dancing With the Stars," with his family in attendance.

'Michael Jackson is one of the biggest reasons R. Kelly is in the game right now,' Kells says of honoring MJ.

R. Kelly concludes his recent Ladies Make Some Noise Tour this weekend and said the trek has been a blessing.

"It was a thrill. I hadn't been on the road in, like, two or three years, expressing myself live," he told MTV News recently. Kelly also said the most exciting part of the tour is hearing the screams, seeing his fans and feeling the unity.

One of the highlights of the concert is Kelly's tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

"Michael Jackson being gone is like our breath, our musical breath, being taken away," Kelly says in his videotaped message. "But I'm not gonna let him die."

Then home-movie footage of Jackson and director Brett Ratner dancing in a vehicle to the sounds of Kells' "Ignition" appears on the screen. R. told us that the King of Pop wanted a song like it of his very own.

"Michael told me one day, he said, 'I wanna know if you can write a song like "Ignition" for me — I love that song,' " Kelly explained. "I was like, 'Mike, man, "Ignition" is not a "Thriller," but much like "Thriller," those type of songs will probably never happen [again]. It'll never happen again. I'm sorry.' "

But Kelly was extremely humbled when he saw Jackson dancing to "Ignition" and felt compelled to put the footage in his show.

"I cried the first time I saw him on YouTube, and I couldn't believe he was in the backseat of the car. He was jamming [to my song]," he said. "You can tell he was into it. He was feeling it. It was like, 'Wow, he's doing my music. He's singing to my music.' It was unbelievable. I knew I made it when I saw that. You can sing songs forever. I've written a lot of songs, and they went around the world. I've won all types of awards, but let me tell y'all something — nothing, nothing told me, I didn't know I made it until I saw Michael Jackson in the back of that car performing and dancing to my song 'Ignition.' That's when it became official. I've been in the game 20 years, but that's when it became official to me that Kells is here, baby, for real."

The video homage to Jackson segues into a montage of Michael's performances and videos. Kelly sings, "Don't say goodbye to me/ There is no need to/ Don't say goodbye to me, because I'm still with you/ Don't say goodbye to me, don't shed a tear/ Because I'm still here/ Go light a candle and say a prayer/ Scream out victory, 'cause love is still there."

"I do dedicate a segment of the show to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is one of the biggest reasons R. Kelly is in the game right now. It's amazing," he explained.

Kelly sped up his wardrobe change so that he could watch the video every night from backstage.

"It made me feel like he was still alive," Kelly smiled. "It made me feel like I still have the chance to go to the level that Michael took it to. It brings me back to what real music is and how it touches and pierces the soul. That's what my mission is."

Regii între ei: R. Kelly (King of R&B) despre Michael Jackson (King of Pop)

You Are Not Alone (1995)

Cry (2001)

N-a greşit.

One More Chance (2003)
